Well this is probably going to be one of my last posts,
which is so depressing even though I’m excited to get back and see you all. As
per usual, I’m procrastinating studying and any form of work that I have to do
for finals, so I figured I’d update you guys on my amazing weekend in Rome.
This weekend was definitely one of the best weekends I’ve
had here. I got the opportunity to spend the weekend in Rome with my cousin
Marco and his mother.. The last time I saw Marco I was 7 I think. He came to
the US for a couple weeks and came on vacation with us in New Hampshire. But
this time was a little different. We’re both grown up now, and this time I was
on vacation in the biggest city in Italy. I got such a good sense of the city,
and Marco did a great job of showing me all that Rome has to offer.
I got to see all of the main tourist attractions –
Colleseum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, St Peter’s etc – but I also
got to see a lot of not so touristy places. Churches, building, monuments, a
sunset overlooking the city, the biggest pizza in Rome, and the best Roman
pasta just to name a few. You’re probably thinking that I must have been
exhausted from walking around the city to all of these places. But oh no – I
got tour around the city on the back on Marco’s Vespa and on the back of his
friends motorcycle which was AWESOME. I’ve always thought that I would be
scared to get on a scooter or motorcycle, but turns out I love it. The scooter
was just the mix between relaxing and exhilarating, and the weather was
absolutely beautiful which made it that much better. The motorcycle on the
other hand was an adrenaline rush. That I loved. Someone back home has to get
one and take me around on it, cause I don’t trust myself to drive one....
So yes, I got to see all of Rome on the back of a “motor,”
but more important than that I experienced the best of Italian hospitality. I
arrived on Friday to a home cooked, three course lunch by Giovanna (Marco’s
mama), and from then on Giovanna and Marco both made sure that I had everything
that I needed and then some. I
also got to meet a lot of Marco’s friends, and they were all so welcoming to Marco’s
“cugina Americana.” They all tried to speak with me in english, and a few of
them came around with us during the day and were more than willing to show me
their favorite parts of Rome.
I could write about this weekend forever, but I guess I
probably should get some work done. All in all this was an incredible
experience. The city of Rome is beautiful and so much more than I was
expecting. My expectations were also blown away with all the people I met and
of course with Marco, my personal tour guide for the weekend. I’m gonna upload
some pictures, but I took so many more that you guys should check out on
facebook.
Now onto my last two finals and photo project. I only have
four days left in this beautiful country, and it’s the most bittersweet thing I’ve
ever experienced. I’ll be back some day – I’m hoping sooner rather than later.
